That Universities Canada Equity Study

Those of you with minds like steel traps may remember that two years ago Universities Canada issued a set of Principles on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.  Not only did they release a set of principles, but also an Action Plan which among other things promised a shiny new survey and “making quantitative data available for benchmarking and comparative analysis”.  Cool, huh? Only if you looked at the fine print (as I noted at the time), the only thing that was going to be

Intriguing New Data on PSE Access

For reasons that continue to baffle me, the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario keeps putting out quite fascinating research papers with almost no fanfare.  Seriously, reading their publications page is the literary equivalent of the sound of a tree falling in an empty forest.  Fabulous, fabulous stuff that somehow appears in conditions of near-absolute secrecy. They are well worth a quick look. The first paper, Obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree from a Community College: Earnings Outlook and Prospects for Graduates, was released on September 9th.  In the five provinces west of Quebec, it has been the

Canadian University Finances 2017-18

So, the 2017-2018 Financial Information of Universities and Colleges survey dropped in July, and as usual I’ve got a two-parter, one on income and balances (today) and one on expenditures (tomorrow). Figure 1 shows the big, long-term picture. University income, in real dollars, is still on an enormous long-term up-tick. This year, total income was $38.7 billion, down very slightly this year from last because it wasn’t quite as bumper a year on the investment/endowment front. Figure 1: University Income
