Janelle Curry

Senior Research Associate

Janelle Curry holds an MA from York University where they specialized in medical anthropology and science and technology studies. They have worked on several SSHRC-funded research projects, from conducting online ethnography to track the social circulation of direct-to-consumer microbiome tests to transcribing interviews with children born of war in Liberia. They have developed extensive knowledge of biotechnologies and privacy and health policies. For their capstone project, they conducted interviews with donor-conceived people to learn how Canada’s regulation of reproductive technologies has reverberated into their lives.

Janelle is trained in qualitative research methods, including using innovative online techniques in qualitative research. Before joining HESA they served in a variety of equity- and inclusion-related roles, like facilitating consent culture workshops and creating a community for queer graduate students at York. Most recently, they adjudicated funding applications from equity groups at the University of Toronto. They are a past Chair of the Policy and Legislative Affairs Committee of the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties and have an ongoing interest in legal protections of privacy.

They are fluent in French and English.
